_Being on the second floor with a narrow stairway entrance from the street on Nanjing East Road, this place can be easily overlooked. Look for the orange signs at street level that are close to a Watsons. Having grown up in the Seattle area where there are enough Indians living to create plenty of exceptional Indian restaurants, I know what great Indian food tastes like. Ali Baba's doesn't quiet match the levels of back home, but it's satisfying.
It seems that it's most popular for its lunch buffet from 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It costs NT$399 plus a 10% service charge. The mango lassi is not as thick as it should be, but still tastes really good. It's a thick (suppose to be), sweet mango yogurt drink. I always look forward to drinking it when going to an Indian restaurant. A normal lassi, soda pop, or tea is also available. There is a good variety of dishes to choose from, including favorites such as tandoori and tikka masala chicken, naan bread, and vegetable samosa, which is the most popular snacks in Northern India, especially during teatime. They also have good desserts, such as fruit salad, mint yogurt, and frozen yogurt. The frozen yogurt flavors were hazelnut, strawberry, mango, and vanilla when I visited. Keep an eye out for the tandoori chicken arrivals because they go fast. By no means is this an exceptional buffet, but it is very satisfying.
If you have a habit of eating too much food at buffets, you can eat during their a la carte hours for dinner from 5:30 p.m. - 11 p.m. They don't offer alcohol, but you can bring your own. The owners and cooks are either Indian or Pakistani, which is a must. I wouldn't eat at a Chinese restaurant that had Polish cooks. There were quiet a few Indians and Pakistanis eating at Ali Baba's; when the ethnicity of the customers and the food offered is the same, the food is more likely to be authentic and quality. I'm happy to have found this place because I have been missing good Indian food that doesn't cost too much. I don't know why Indian restaurants cost so much in Taipei; Indian food is suppose to be cheap.
Vegetarian options: It's Indian food, so there are a lot of vegetarian options. Check out the vegetarian specialties on the their menu. I took pictures of the whole menu for your viewing pleasure below.
