Burger Ray is different than other hamburger joints because they have a DIY system when it comes to burger toppings and sauce. First you order a burger a la carte or as a set -- a set comes with fries and a drink -- and you can pay for extra items like an egg, guacamole, a second patty, bacon, caramelized onions, sauerkraut, etc. (look at their menu in the picture section to see all the options). You are given a number that they'll call when it's time for you to pick up your food. Then you slide your burger tray down the veggie bar, adding whatever sauce, veggies, and other ingredients you want -- it's all included in the price. The most notable of these free toppings is jalapeños. That's right, you heard me correctly, put as many of those bad boys on as you want. Another great customized option is being given three different sauce choices, so that you can avoid the typical Taiwanese dilemma of not being given enough sauce with your food. And I'm not talking about just ketchup and mustard, which is also available, I'm talking about specialized sauces. They also have a cheese and chili pump (again, included in the price), which also works great for fries.
Everything that I've just conveyed is amazing, so you may be wondering why I didn't give Burger Ray a 5-star rating. The simple answer is the patties. They are too small for one, but that isn't why I only gave them a 4-star rating; it's because all of their patty choices are just OK. I'll list each one. The normal beef patty isn't seasoned at all, so it doesn't really stand out in flavor, leaving one tasting only the amazing toppings that they've added to their burger. Even with the great toppings, the beef must be tasty enough to make an excellent burger. I didn't find any fault in the quality, it's just the lack of taste due to no seasoning being added. This is super important when it comes to burgers. The seafood patty was forgettable. It's nice they have a vegetarian patty option, but it's mushy and tasteless. The foie gras and truffle burger is pretty yummy -- still not delicious -- but it's very overpriced. Also, I don't think it really goes that well in a burger -- it doesn't clash, but they don't compliment each other enough to warrant such a creation, in my opinion.
By looking at my pictures, displaying all the yummy extras and toppings, the burgers look delicious, but the patties hold back the overall taste of the burger. I enjoyed my two visits to Burger Ray because the DIY aspect of the experience was cool, but I don't see myself going back after trying it a couple times when there are other superb burger options in Taipei.
Vegetarian options: Quinoa Mushroom Veggie Burger (a la carte NT$145, set NT$195).
