This restaurant may be located in the underground food court with venders, but make no mistake, Indian cuisine at Calcutta Indian Food is at the top of the Indian dining experiences in Taipei. Also, don't worry, it's completely partitioned from the venders and is a real restaurant in all aspects; it's just underground instead of on the street level. They used to be at the street level on Kunming Street, not too far away from their current address, but they moved underground. They most likely did this to save on rent and/or to have a larger seating area, but I feel that it was a bad move because most people go into that underground location to eat at venders, which cuts down on all the possible walk-by potential clients they would get if they had stayed on Kunming Street. Other people might not eat there because they'll think it's of low quality, being that it's next to the venders in the underground. I understand this mindset because I would have thought the same thing and wouldn't have ate at Calcutta if I hadn't already eaten their delicious food at their first location.
They have some of the best Indian curry dishes and naan bread that I've eaten in Taipei. Like all other Indian restaurants in Taipei, the price isn't cheap like non-Taiwanese are use to, but it's acceptable and cheaper than most other Indian restaurants in Taipei. You can choose the level of spiciness for your curry dishes, but most people, including myself, don't like customizing or even think about this option, so the restaurant's regular amount of spiciness is given. This is where Calcutta excels over every other Indian restaurant I've eaten at in Taipei. Calcutta doesn't hold back any punches and serves their curry with the authentic amount of spiciness for their dishes. It's such a shame when I eat at other Indian restaurants and get a mild curry dish that should have been served spicy in order to be authentic and delicious. I love spicy food, so this really matters to me. Also, Calcutta doesn't water down their curry dishes or add too much oil like a lot of other Taipei Indian restaurants do; I've noticed that this is a big problem in the Indian food scene in Taipei.
Some other Indian restaurants in Taipei may serve better tandoori meat or biryani (actually, Calcutta doesn't even offer biryani), but Calcutta Indian Food serves some of the best, if not the best, curry dishes and naan bread in Taipei. They tend to be the first restaurant I think of when I get a craving for Indian food. I've tried a lot more of their curry dishes than is posted in the pictures below, due to eating several times with groups of people that naturally make it too hard to take pictures when everyone can't wait to put the delicious food in their stomachs.
Vegetarian options: Samosa, Papadum, Lentil Soup, Channa Masala Curry, Paneer Butter Masala Curry, Fried Pureed Eggplant Curry, Pureed Spinach with Cottage Cheese Curry, Lentil Curry, Potato & Green Peas Curry, Potato & Cauliflower Curry, Potato cooked in Fenugreek Leaves Curry, Stir Fried Assorted Vegetable Curry, Vegetables cooked in Tomato Sauce & Spices Curry, Vegetables cooked in Coconut Sauce & Spices Curry, 4 different Indian salads, Naan Bread, Rice, and Lassi.
