_Chun Shui Tang (春水堂) meaning spring water hall, the cafe that invented the bubble/pearl milk tea. It has a really nice traditional mixed with modern art decor with soft lighting, creating a great atmosphere for chatting with friends over some tea and side dishes.
I got to love bubble tea in the USA before even visiting an Asian country. Although, I only drank the fruity favors with pearls back home. It is great to live in the country that invented pearl milk tea; invented in Taichung, Taiwan. Liu Han Chie experimented with cold milk tea by adding fruit, syrup, candied yams, and tapioca balls (pearl/bubbles are made from tapioca) in the early 1980s. Although the drink was not popular at first, a Japanese television show generated interest in it among businessmen. The drink became well-known in most parts of East and Southeast Asia during the 1990s.
I tried their bubble milk tea, lemon green tea, sesame cakes, dried tofu with special sauce, pork blood rice cakes with special sauce, onion rings, and taro cake. Even though they invented the bubble/pearl milk tea, I find that it was just OK; too watered-down tasting. Two of my Taiwanese friends, who don't know each other, both agreed with me on this. Even knowing this information, I realize that you might be tempted to order it anyway since they are the tea house that invented the pearl milk tea -- just don't expect it to be really good. The lemon green tea, however, was very refreshing and delicious.
Every single side dish that I had was exceptional; I'd return for them solely. Instead of explaining each one of the side dishes to you in a long rambling snobby fashion, just know that whatever makes each one of these items excellent -- that is what the side dishes at Chun Shui Tang possess. When they say an item comes with special sauce on the menu, believe it, every sauce I've had their was tantalizing to the last drop.
Vegetarian Fare: Green Soy Beans, Taro Cake, Cantonese Turnip Pudding, Dried Tofu with Special Sauce, Fried Sweet Potato, Boiled Seasoned Vegetables, Vegetable Tofu Tempura, Burdock Root Tempura, Steamed Wild Mushrooms, Winter Mushroom with Tofu Skin, and Bubble Aiyu-jelly with Lemon Flavor. Both of their breakfast combos served from 8:30-11am are vegetarian: Taro Cake + Fried Egg + Salad and Taiwanese Turnip Pudding + Fried Egg + Salad.
