鬼金棒 is another Japanese chain ramen shop that has made its way into Taiwan. They currently have three locations in Taipei at the time of this review. They focus on spicy ramen, but that isn't their only option. They also have a tasty spring onion ramen and a pork belly rice bowl. The most unique item and ingredient that really makes their ramen grand is the tender, flavorful pork pieces in block form.
Ordering is done on a vending machine where you choose which ramen bowl you want, and then you can add ingredients (egg, pork belly piece, ext.) to your bowl for an additional amount if you wish. Then you insert cash into the vending machine and it'll give you a ticket that you'll give to a worker. The vending machine is only in Chinese and there is no English anywhere in their shops. But no need to worry, if you press one of the three large buttons at the top of the vending machine (at the Zhongshan location) you're good to go. The large button on the top left is what I call the gourmet spicy bowl. It's the six picture down in the picture section. They'll ask you how spicy you want your broth to be after you give them the ticket that the vending machine gave you. I got a little spicy on my first visit and medium on my second visit. I like spicy food, but I enjoyed having my broth a little spicy (邵辣, shào là) because I think it went much better with the other elements in the base; the spiciness didn't overpower the other tasty flavors and spices in the broth. This ramen choice has a spicy miso broth that includes a pork and powerful seafood flavor, but it's the two large pork blocks that really make this ramen deluxe. The pork is tender and very flavorful. The two large buttons on the top right (again, at the Zhongshan location) are the only non-spicy ramen choices and contain a good amount of spring onions. These ramen options aren't spicy, so you only need to give the workers behind the counter your ticket and they will not ask you how spicy you want it -- they won't ask you anything. I thought they were both delicious on my first visit. I was going to give them a 5-star rating, but on my second visit they put too much of what tasted like star anise in the broth, which made the ramen taste only OK. So I averaged out my rating to 4 stars. I've heard many great things about 鬼金棒, so I'm inclined to think that my second visit was an anomaly and they usually do it right. Again, the blocks of tender, flavorful pork are what makes 鬼金棒 so special when comparing them to other Japanese ramen chains.
Vegetarian options: None, pork and seafood is in all the broth, and the other option besides ramen is a pork rice bowl.
