Not too far from the Fuzhong MRT station in Banqiao you can find this little cozy Italian cafe that serves pizza and pasta solely by Castrucci Sandro, an Italian man from Rome with a thick Italian accent. The first Italian I've ever met in Taiwan and luckily he runs an Italian cafe.
While walking to a table, I noticed that he gets his tomato sauce and olive oil from Italy; large amounts sitting on top of his oven. This makes me feel good because even an Italian with great recipes and cooking abilities can fall short by using the ingredients that are only offered in Taiwan. I ordered the pesto alla Genovese (pesto Genovese style). There are various styles of pesto, but the most original is Genovese pesto because pesto originated from Genoa in northern Italy. It is made with Genovese basil, salt, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, European pine nuts, and a grated cheese like parmesan. It's one of my favorite dishes. The pesto aroma could be smelt as the plate was placed on the table in front of me. Sandro's pesto hit the spot.
I ordered a margherita pizza to go and I noticed while he was making it that he put olive oil on the pizza; that is Italian...that is how it's done. When I got home, I ended up eating the whole pizza pie because it was delicious; perfect amount of tomato sauce and cheese. Like always, I added crushed red chili peppers, and this time a little more extra virgin olive oil because I'm a extra virgin olive oil addict.
I visited again and ate a vegetaee (vegetarian) pizza. It hit the spot and was a great dinner.
