There are very few authentic Italian pizza places in Taipei. At the time of this review, I'm only aware of Pizzeria Oggi 拿坡里披薩專 and Zoca Pizza 佐佧比薩 living up to the label of authentic Italian pizza--certification or no certification. Pizzeria Oggi's Tom Hsieh (謝宜榮) is a cookbook author and a chef who has worked at several five-star hotels in Taipei. Pizzeria Oggi is one of the few establishments in Taiwan that is certified by the AVPN (Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana)--Zoca isn't on the list, but they are authentic, too.
Pizzeria Oggi is meticulous in their process of making authentic pizza: They use a wood-fired oven; the pizza dough is made with premium flour from Italy’s Molino Caputo, one of the world’s top pizza flour makers; only fresh ingredients are used; Himalayan sea salt and black pepper grinders are available on tables; slightly spicy olive oil to pour on your pizza is also on tables, as it is at many authentic Italian pizza joints in Italy. This last point--the spicy olive oil--is something that I have definitely missed at pizza places whilst living and eating in Taipei and was ecstatic to have found it at Oggi; I'm an olive oil fiend!
Pizzeria Oggi creates two styles of pizza: thin crust Roman pizza and Neapolitan pizza. They also make dessert pizza, which includes their sought-after banana Nutella pizza. They even offer some wheat-crust pizza choices. On my visit Oggi was temporarily out of stock of the Neapolitan-pizza ingredients, so we only got to try their Roman-style crust pizza, so unfortunately I wasn't able to compare it to Zoca Pizza's Neapolitan pizza; this will have to wait for another visit. Oggi's Roman-style pizzas were authentic down to the details and were completely delicious. Some may accuse Oggi of skimping on cheese; however, the amount of cheese they use is the authentic amount, it isn't suppose to be covering the whole pizza. This is where New York-style pizza comes in; it was introduced in America by Italian immigrants who took their authentic Roman-style thin crust pizza and completely covered it with a thin layer of cheese--not the outer crust, of course.
Pizzeria Oggi may be more expensive than Zoca Pizza, but will definitely satisfy anyone if the amount of money leaving your wallet/purse is ignored.
