Solo Pasta 義大利麵 is the first Taiwanese restaurant claiming to serve authentic Italian food in Taipei that I agree with. Their pasta is cooked al dente, their sauce is legit and delicious, and they use quality Italian ingredients. I wasn't expecting much because I've eaten at many Taiwanese-run restaurants that said their food was authentic, but fell completely short. Ergo, Solo Pasta completely shocked me! Their pasta dish prices range from NT$240-360 (with only two of them costing more than NT$280), which is a great price for authentically delicious Italian pasta in Taipei, especially when you consider that many other Taipei pasta restaurants that aren't even close to being as authentic or delicious sell their pasta dishes at the same price, or higher. I particularly loved these three pasta dishes of theirs: Smoked Duck Breast in Balsamic Cream Sauce Spaghetti (NT$260), Sweet Basil Pesto Spaghettini (NT$240), and Carbonara (NT$240).
It wasn't until I got home from my dining experience at Solo Pasta and did a little research on them that I understood why they were the real thing. The information I found completely validated my opinion of their cuisine. Their restaurant has an Ospitalità Italiana Seal of Quality, which is a certification promoted by the Chambers of Commerce to evaluate the quality of the receptive and restorative facilities in Italy. Not many Italian restaurants in Taipei have this Italian seal of quality, and Solo Pasta is the only one on the list that will not cost you a fortune to eat at. Don't make the mistake of equating price to the quality of food given (that's a fools game); Solo Pasta is just as good if not better than its competitors. They claim that their top chef, J-Ping, visits Italy every six months for three week duration stays; he visits local restaurants in Bologna, Sicily, Naples, Rome, Venice, and other cities, to learn the most authentic dishes. I don't know if that's true, but I do know their food is delicious and authentic, and that's what matters.
If you want to eat some authentic Italian pasta in Taipei without breaking the bank, Solo Pasta is your savior. However, if you do venture to other items on their menu besides the pasta, most of the prices are higher as compared to their pasta, which is typically for fine dining--Solo Pasta is actually casual dining, but I've found that the only difference between Solo Pasta and fine dining is that Solo Pasta doesn't have white tablecloths or ridiculous high prices that are aimed at stroking egos and impressing shallow dates. OK, I'm not going to bad-mouth all fine dining; some fine-dining dishes might be worth the price, rarely, and may be good to partake of on special occasions now and then.
Vegetarian options: Please refer to the menu pictures I took. I know just as much as you know by looking at the menu, whether something is vegetarian or not. I can say that their Spaghettini with Sweet Basil Pesto (NT$240), which is vegetarian, was the most authentic and delicious pesto pasta I've had in Taipei, and warrants a trip to Solo Pasta alone.
