太陽のトマト麺 (Taiyo Tomato-Noodle) (太陽蕃茄拉麵) is a Japanese chain ramen and curry restaurant in Japan. They opened their first location in Taipei on Halloween of 2012. At the time of this review they had two location in Taiwan, both in Taipei: one by Main Station and one by Taipei City Hall.

Taiyo Tomato Noodle is different than other Japanese ramen restaurants. Their ramen is a mix between Japanese ramen and Italian sauce and soup. Therefore, their dishes are more like soup than ramen broth, making them not as heavy and rich. If one came to Taiyo wanting typical Japanese ramen broth, they might be disappointed. If you know what you're in for, you'll enjoy it.

They have four different soup bases: basil, chicken, tomato, and curry. There are three different dish choices per soup base, except for tomato, which has seven choices. When you're about half way done with your dish, the staff might ask if you want a free refill of chicken soup into whatever your soup base choice was. The refill chicken soup is not as salty and much lighter than the normal chicken soup base, so be aware that it will drastically cut down on the richness of the rest of your ramen. After trying all four soup bases, I would only recommend getting a refill of the light chicken soup if you ordered the tomato soup base, because the tomato soup is the only soup base that's pretty powerful in richness and saltiness. You can ask the waiter for the refill light chicken soup whenever you want during your dish. If it's really busy, you may have to ask them anyway.

Their noodles are thinner than most ramen places. I prefer normal to thicker noodles. The noodles were cooked to a good ratio of chewiness to tenderness. They're cooked to the typical standard of Japanese noodles; firmer than soggy Chinese noodles and not as chewy as Italian al dente spaghetti.

When it comes to Japanese curry, they offer another unique option. Instead of Japanese curry, you can order a sweet sauce. It tasted like a sweet, tangy Japanese salad dressing to me. Whichever sauce you choose, you can get a free refill of either sauce. However, I thought that both their curry and sweet sauce were bad. I definitely don't recommend their curry. I recommend sticking with their ramen, pork cutlets, and side dishes.

Vegetarian options: Even though most of their soup bases are vegetarian -- well, I don't know if they use some animal byproducts in them or not -- they contain chicken, beef, clams, or pork. Like most Japanese restaurants, this is not a restaurant for vegetarians.
