The Island resides in an old Japanese building from 1930. Of course, it's been refurbished. It has a quiet cafe atmosphere. There is live music performances every Friday night from 7 - 9 pm. They specialize in panini, coffee, tea, smoothies, and milkshakes. I have found completely delicious items in all of these categories.
When you order one of their panini, you can choose between ciabatta, thick cut toast, or a tortilla. Every panini picture below is with ciabatta because I love ciabatta bread and didn't want to try the others, review or no review. The panini selection ranges from delicious to not so good. The Italian roast beef with marinara sauce is the best panini they serve. It's also the best panini that I've had in Taipei. The smoothies and milkshakes are made of quality ingredients and are very delicious. The espresso based coffee drinks are good. They're on the less bitter side. The tea and tea and juice drinks are powerfully exquisite. However, the desserts were a huge disappointment; I don't recommend their desserts. The appetizers are mostly deep fried snacks. They're good, but completely overpriced.
Vegetarian options: 3 Kinds of Cheese Panini (NT$220), Garden Vegetable Panini (NT$220), Blended Mushrooms Panini (NT$230), Appetizers: French Fries (NT$140), Onion Rings (NT$160), Cheese Fingers (NT$150)

This video will give you a glimpse into the history of The Island's old Japanese building and the surrounding area. Most pictures are from the 1930's. I found it interesting to look back in time around the Taipei Main Station area.
