Tonchin 屯京拉麵 is one of the Japanese based ramen chains that has international locations that include Taipei. Tonchin provides authentic ramen from the Ikebukuro District in Tokyo, Japan. Their locations in Taipei have an immaculate, modern design. Every Japanese ramen chain in Taipei that I've tried has been delicious. There are variations between them, but I wouldn't say any of them are better than the other. However, depending on your preference and/or mood, there are particular Japanese ramen restaurants that you might appreciate more than the others.
Tonchin provides a broth that isn't as oily and salty as some of their counterparts. Their broth selections are delicious to the last spoonful. The broth doesn't get tiresome or overpowering half way through or towards the bottom of the bowl. They also give a good amount of ingredients (ramen, meat, eggs, etc.) for the price. I have found that most other Japanese ramen chains charge a little more for the same amount of ingredients. They only have one type of noodle. Some people say that it reminds them too much like instant noodles because of the shape, not because of the quality. I prefer most other Japanese ramen places when it comes to the noodles, but I would eat at Tonchin again, because their broth and ingredients are so delicious. Also, I might feel like their type of noodles on a given day. I rate ramen in three areas: broth, noodles, and toppings. Tonchin scored my highly rating for both broth and toppings.
Your server will ask you if you want a medium or large portion of noodles. They are the same price, but there is no point in ordering more than you can eat, because they don't allow takeaway for unfinished ramen meals. They give generous proportions, so the medium serving will do nicely for most people. Piggies like me should order the large serving. Everything that I tried at Tonchin was delicious, including the side dishes.
The side dishes and appetizers include: salad, cold tofu, edamame (green soybeans in the pod with salt), chicken nuggets, karaage (deep-fried chicken), tonkatsu egg teppanyaki, buttered clams, pork in ginger sauce, miso pork intestines, French fries, egg riced bowl, buttered spinach and corn, and rice.
Vegetarian options: This restaurant isn't suited for vegetarians.
