Lil' America 小美國 -- I Recommend ☆☆☆☆
Taipei street vender offering: Hamburger / Chili Dog / Sloppy Joe / Fried Oreos / Fried Bananas / Fried Snickers / French Fries

If you want to try something different on your next trip to a night market, try out this street vender. I had heard and seen episodes on The Food Channel about unique fried desserts that originated from Southern America and in the UK, but am not familiar with it since I'm from Seattle, USA, which is in the very northwest of America, two hours away from the Canadian border. Deep fried foods, especially Oreos, are now a carnival and fair food favorite in some parts of America. Lil' America also has other foods that originated in America, such as, the chili dog and the sloppy joe. They also have french fries, which are very popular in America, but originated from Belgium; that's right, they're not from France despite the name. However, the fried desserts are the real draw to Lil' America. The fried bananas and Oreos were my favorite.
Food I tried:
Hot Dog (which is a Chili Dog): A chili dog is a hot dog with chili con carne on top. It was really nice to try a classic American street food after so long.
Hamburger: It's a very basic burger that is pretty good, but don't expect anything gourmet.
Fried Bananas: Delicious! You might want to wait till it cools a bit, so it doesn't burn your mouth. It melts in your mouth; a sweet, warm, mooshy banana with a thin crunchy covering.
Fried Oreos: The Oreo loses it's hard crunchy texture and becomes a warm chocolaty cake. The creamy center melts and creates an inner vanilla glaze. It makes a whole new brilliant Oreo experience.
Fried Snickers: It was yummy, but deep fried Snickers does taste too much like normal snickers just warmed up. Snickers is America's #1 candy bar.
French Fries: Good and crispy french fries always go well with a hamburger, hot dog, or by themselves.

I've been to Chili's a few times in The USA and didn't care for their food enough to keep coming back. After my visit to Chili's in Taipei, I can say that it is just like the USA restaurant chain; in this case that is a bad thing. The food is not horrible, they have a few pretty good dishes, but overall most of the dishes are just mediocre, and in Taipei the price of their food is not worth it. I would like everyone who is not American, especially Taiwanese, to know that this restaurant chain is not a good representation of good American food, so please don't judge our culinary skills after your visit to Chili's; America does offer a lot of delicious food. Yes, you'll find some Americans who like Chili's, otherwise they would not still be in business, but that just goes to show that there are quite a few people out there with bad taste. I'm not trying to be snobby, but just tell it like it is. Hey, we can't all be talented food critics or every John and Bob out there would have their own credible food blog.
Food I tried:
BBQ Ranch Burger: The beef pattie was devoid of any real taste, leaving the burger completely bland.
Original Half Rack of Ribs: It was OK, but lacked the mouth watering taste of quality ribs.
Classic Nachos: Delicious nachos with a lot of cheese and your choice of sauce dip. However, it was completely overpriced for the serving amount.
Brownie Sundae: Completely delicious; rich brownie with quality vanilla ice cream. At least I can recommend the desserts at Chili's.

A Bavarian German restaurant with an alluring castle decor. Excellent German beer, sausage, and fried platters are the main highlights of this brewery / restaurant. If you're tired of the bland pork sausage that is served everywhere in Taipei, visit Le Blé d'Or for some German sausage -- German sausage is the best in the world.
I tried all the beers, Sausage (2-4 people), Pork with Mango Sauce and Rice, Vegetarian Pizza, Brownie with ice-cream, and Mozzarella Sticks. The Honey Lager was one of the best sweet beers I've ever had and was my favorite of all the samplers, but that is because I'm not really a beer drinker and like the least hoppiest beers. Whether you are a beer enthusiast or not, you'll love this beer that actually has honey highlights in the taste and isn't the least bit bitter. The Sausage was delicious. It consisted of two different sausages, one typical German sausage and one with a smoked flavor, cut into small pieces and served with sauerkraut and honey mustard dipping sauce. The local Taiwanese pork sausage is completely bland to my taste-buds. It's so nice to have German sausage again; it's been awhile.
The Pork with Mango Sauce and Rice was excellent. The slightly spicy mango sauce is what makes this dish great. If it would've been served with chicken instead of pork, it would've been completely exquisite since chicken is more tender and flavorful in its natural state. One of the last things you should order at a German restaurant is a pizza and this holds true at Le Blé d'Or because the vegetarian pizza, although having a good amount of yummy cheese, was completely bland having no sauce or herbs -- just bread, cheese, and some toppings. Go to an Italian and/or pizza restaurant if you want good pizza. The Mozzarella sticks were quality but weren't served with an dipping sauce. You have to have marinara sauce with mozzarella sticks! The Brownie and ice-cream came with chocolate and caramel drizzled sauce and was very good.

N.Y. Bagels has been open since 1998 and was the first bagel shop in Taipei. Yes, they have much, much more than just bagels, but if you're looking for bagels, they serve the best bagels in Taipei. If you're missing NY style bagels, this is where you need to come. I visited their only 24 hour location out of their seven locations. I tried their Cinnamon Raisin Bagel with Onion and Chive Cream Cheese, Blueberry Bagel with Fruit Cream Cheese, Spinach Eggs Benedict Breakfast Set, Bacon Breakfast Set, Sausage Breakfast Set with French Toast instead of a Bagel and Scrambled Eggs instead of sunny-side up, N.Y. Cheese Burger, Strawberry Heaven Pudding Toast, Mixed Fruits Caramelized Pudding Toast, Hot Mocha Latte, Hot Cafe Latte, and a Tiramisu Coffee.
The N.Y. Cheese Burger was a good burger with a nice beef pattie flavor. Not the best I've had, but certainly better than a lot of burgers in Taipei. The Cinnamon Raisin Bagel was a good, authentic bagel just like you get at a quality place in America and the Onion and Chive Cream Cheese was delightful, maybe could've been more powerful, but that is debatable. The Blueberry Bagel and especially the Fruit Cream Cheese were absolutely superb. The Spinach Eggs Benedict Breakfast Set would've been really delicious, but the spinach was cold unlike the rest of the Benedict which was off-putting and kind of ruined the whole dish. Try to get them to warm up the spinach if you order this. If they won't, don't bother with it. Such a shame because you don't normally see a vegetarian Eggs Benedict and I know it would taste exquisite if they make this one altercation. The Bacon Breakfast Set and the Sausage Breakfast Set were pretty good, but a little too basic and leaves me wishing their was something more on my plate for a big hearty American breakfast. If you aren't a pig like me, it might be enough to please you, though.
Both the Pudding Toasts were a complete disaster. Sure the picture looks good, but the bread tastes not only completely doll, but has a big yeast flavored aftertaste -- disgusting! I normally always finish my meals, but this dish was not worth the stomach room, at all. The Hot Cafe Latte and the Hot Mocha Latte were both not even close to being hot, but a little warmer than room temperature, which would piss-off any coffee aficionado. The two cups of coffee themselves were OK, too much milk taste and not enough espresso taste. It is hard to find a good cup of coffee in Taipei. Too bad because I was looking forward to drinking coffee at this location during one of my late night meanderings since it's open 24 hours.

Foremost, Gordon Biersch is a brewery that brews their own award winning quality beers, using only traditional ingredients imported from Germany. You can try any of their beers in a 500ml glass for NT$230 -- great price for such quality beer. You can also get a sampling of all their beer for NT$230. If you want, you can take some of their beer home with you in a growler. As a fine establishment, they also serve an array of quality meals which are listed above.
I tried their Pepperoni Mushroom Pizza, Gordon Biersch Cheese Burger, and Gordon Biersch's Golden Export and Seasonal Beer. I'm not a beer drinker so I can't properly rate it, but I was accompanied by a German and he was very satisfied. Besides, Gordon Biersch's beers have won gold, silver, and bronze medals, which is enough to convey the quality of their beer.
The Gordon Biersch Cheese Burger was downright delicious. They asked me how I wanted it cooked which is a rarity in Taipei. I felt like blood that night and ordered it medium-rare, and that is exactly what I got. The burger was so satisfying that I swallowed it up in less than 5 minutes, it seemed. The beef pattie was thick and full of flavor and the burger was accompanied by their famous garlic French fries. The only thing about the burger that wasn't top notch was the bread bun because it was a white flavorless bread and the bottom part was soft, mushy, and almost turned into a liquid on my fingers; although, that last part is probably due to the fact that I had the beef pattie cooked to medium-rare, making it full of more juices than normal. The pizza was pretty good. They make their own dough which is nice because it's fresh, but the dough wasn't cooked enough, leaving it too doughy and didn't really have any flavor to it. The toppings were quality, but I didn't like the fact that half the cheese wasn't melted. It was a pretty good pizza and accompanied the beer quite nicely, but for NT$440, I would rather get pizza elsewhere that is better and cheaper.

Brass Monkey is a sports bar with a pool table. Being a sports bar, they focus on alcohol and bar snacks, of course. They also offer other food, but most of it is not up to par. They have special events including salsa dancing every Tuesday night from 9pm to late with margaritas, Corona beer, and tequila shots for NT$100 and night club dancing with a DJ every Thursday night from 9pm to 4am with free cocktails and entry for ladies from 9-midnight (entry is free all night), minimum charge NT$150 for guys.
I attended salsa dancing night and tried their BBQ Bacon Cheese Burger, Pepperoni Pizza, Nachos, and Margaritas. The burger was bland and the pizza would only taste good if you were drunk and needed food badly. The Nachos, however, were pretty good with three side dipping sauces of guacamole, salsa, and sour cream. The Margaritas were on the rocks and were perfect bar quality, having the correct amount of alcohol to sour taste -- good price for a bar NT$100 (only salsa nights).
The food is not the focus here, sports, alcohol, and events are. At 9pm every Tuesday, they move tables and chairs to create a dancing floor for everyone to salsa dance. Attendees range from pros to never haves, from couples to singles. They play great salsa music and the night heats up as you drink down those themed drinks and start to get some salsa moves down. It is a nice change from night clubbing and there is no smoking inside so you will not leave reeking of cigarettes.

_I have never been to a Hooters in the USA so I can't say how it differs, but I'm assuming it tastes about the same as here in Taipei. I was craving those deep fried sauce dipping platters that I have had before at T.G.I Friday's in the USA. At Hooters it turned out to be just so-so tasting; I should've gone to T.G.I. Friday's where they are better. Hooters' burgers are just OK. All the food just seemed OK. Maybe we didn't order the right things. Let me know if you have had something at Hooters that you really liked.
Vegetarian Fare: Caesar Salad, Garden Salad, Mexican Chips Dips (1 of the 3 dips has meat so you can special order what dips you want), Fried Mushrooms, Fried Mozzarella Cheese Sticks, Fried Onion Rings, Popcorn (haha, it is just normal plain popcorn--really?!), Fries/Curly Fries, and the desserts: Chocolate Mousse Cake and Caramel Fudge Cheese Cake.
I don't think people go there for the food ;)

T.G.I. Friday's is a good place to go for general western food and alcohol beverages in Taipei. They have a little bit of everything except for pizza, so almost all your western food needs can be quenched here. I use to visit T.G.I. Friday's every now and then back home in the states mostly during happy hour, and drank and ate appetizers and samplers while chatting with friends.
On this visit I tried the Parmesan-Crusted Chicken Quesadilla, Jack Daniel's Burger, Friday's Chicken Sandwich, New York Cheese Cake Dessert, and the Tiramisu Dessert Drink. I enjoyed everything that I tried. The Parmesan Chicken Quesadilla was superbly filled with quality Monterey Jack Cheese, chicken, and a tomato-basil mix. The sweet balsamic glaze drizzled on top mingled with all the ingredients, creating a smashing success. The Jack Daniel's Burger beef pattie was pretty good, but when you dump all the Jack Daniels sauce, which is in a side container, on the burger, it creates a sweet unique burger experience. Even though the menu said that all patties are cooked well-done unless otherwise specified, my beef pattie was cooked medium which was great. I like my beef pattie medium, but I never special order because I want to review the menu item as is, to help out the most general populace. The Friday's Chicken Sandwich had some Cajun spices that created a nice spicy dance with the marinated chicken, three strips of bacon, and melted Jack cheese.
I knew I could rely on T.G.I. Friday's to offer a real American style cheesecake for my dessert: dense, powerful rich cheesy taste, and a crumbled crust. There was also strawberry mousse on top and strawberry and mango sauce on the side in a modern art drizzle style. These little additions made it so I could have different cheesecake taste experiences with one dessert; the strawberry mousse on top was particularly enticing. The Tiramisu drink was a blend of chocolate, Amaretto, and vanilla ice-cream; a classic Italian dessert gone liquid, as the menu stated. This drink was absolutely exquisite to the last drop; the crunchy chocolate bits in the vanilla ice-cream with amaretto, topped with whipped-cream, really tasted like I was drinking a very good tiramisu dessert.
My favorite item at T.G.I. Friday's is the full meal Chicken Quesadilla, but I didn't see it on the menu or on their Taiwan website, but I had it a couple months ago at the Sinyi District location. I really hope they didn't omit it from their selection.
