Whalen's is a culinary haven! I have so many good things to say that I don't know where to start. Alex Whalen brings his Canadian food to Taipei for all our desperate North American stomachs. It's also some of the best American food that I've had in Taipei. In all my trips to Whalen's, I still haven't eaten anything that I didn't like, and usually I don't just like it, but love it. Also, the food quality and taste was consistent on every visit. You will not get the typical Taipei restaurant food service where you're wondering if it's going to be the same as last time you visited, or where sometimes it seems like you went back to a different restaurant altogether. Not at Whalen's. They not only bring authentic North American food to Taipei, but also the reliable, consistent service that is a must in North America if you want to stay in business.
If you have been missing North American food, and have been disappointed by the numerous awful Western restaurants in Taipei, look no further. Alex Whalen doesn't use low quality ingredients to increase his profit margins like so many other North American expats have done in Taipei. He brings the same quality and taste as back home. Whalen's has the best North American sandwiches I've had in Taipei so far, hands down. If you are tired of those small Taiwanese sandwiches that contain next to no ingredients where sometimes your bite only contains bread, you need to pay Whalen's a visit for a REAL SANDWICH!
I've heard endless complaints from Canadians and Americans about not being able to find a big North American breakfast anywhere in Taipei. Forget about The Diner, Whalen's is the place to go to not only get an authentic North American breakfast, but a brimming plate of breakfast goodness whatever your needs are: skillets, omelets, sandwiches, salads, quiches, and yogurt parfait. Most meals come with your choice of two sides and a drink. For only NT$40-70 more, you can get a large side order of your choice of poutine or Benny fries (fries with Hollandaise sauce). Of course, your lunch and dinner needs are completely satisfied here as well.
Every gourmet poutine I tried, which was most of them, was completely satisfying. Again, I find myself saying this is the best that I've had in Taipei. Whalen's poutine definitely is gourmet as the menu states.
